PROBLEM:
During the installation, the screen went completely blank, but I can still hear the music playing.

WHAT'S CAUSING IT:
At the time your screen goes blank, the installation is performing something we call the basic sound test . It runs an .AVI file called GROOVE.AVI and asks you to confirm that you can hear it. AVI files have both audio and video components, but because the installation is checking ONLY for sound at this point, we omitted the video portion of GROOVE.AVI. The reason you’re seeing the blank screen is because Video For Windows on your system is set for the FULL SCREEN mode instead of the WINDOW mode. It’s expanding the video portion of GROOVE.AVI to fill the screen. But, remember GROOVE.AVI has NO video, so Video For Windows fills your entire screen with total nothingness!!

HOW TO FIX IT:
Reboot your system. Change Video For Windows to the WINDOW mode and rerun the installation. Here's how:

For Windows 3.1x users:

1. In the “Main” program group, double click on the “Drivers” icon.
2. Scroll down the list of Installed Drivers to find one called:

[MCI] Microsoft Video For Windows
3. Point to it with your mouse and double click. The Video Playback Options dialog box will appear.
4. In the Video Mode section, change the setting from Full Screen To Window.
5. Click on Set Default to close the Video Playback Options screen. Then click on Close to close the Drivers screen.
6. Rerun the Quest For Fame installation program.

For Windows 95 users:

  1. Click on “Start”. Choose “Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Now double-click the “Multimedia” icon. The Multimedia Properties dialog box will appear.
  3. Select Video. In the “Show Video in:” section, change the setting from Full Screen to Window.
  4. In the box to the right of the word Window, select “Original size”
  5. Click on OK and repeat the Quest For Fame installation.
